Oprah Winfrey; billionaire media executive, actress, TV host, motivational guru & philanthropist. With somewhat of a rocky childhood, Oprah didn’t let that get in the way of her grind and determination for a bigger and better future for herself. Her morning routine is one of the biggest factors in her day that sets her up for success, and with a few simple rituals, she has become one of the biggest success stories of all time.

Oprah was born and raised in Mississippi, under the care of her mother, Vernita. She had tough adolescence in their small farming community which caused her to leave Mississippi and move to Nashville and live with her father, Vernon.

To this day, Winfrey says her father saved her life. He gave her the skills she needed to be an extraordinary student and have the courage to be a motivational speaker. This new-found confidence gave Oprah the skills to skip a few grades and practice public speaking wherever she could. With her excelling at school, it was no shock that her good grades got her into Tennessee State University where she studied television and broadcasting.


Upon graduating, Oprah spent 10 years in the broadcasting industry, working her way up the corporate ladder, choosing to work on TV chat shows and morning shows. Early on in Oprah’s life, she knew she was going to be a success, she had always had the belief in her that she was going to be an inspiration to others.

In 1986, The Oprah Winfrey Show aired, which was the milestone that changed her whole career. She spent 25 years being the host of her show, which captivated an audience of 10 million people and 100 countries worldwide. 

After the first year of her show aired, Oprah started to be recognized for being an influencer and began to be respected for the great mind she was. She then began her other endeavors like Oprah Book Club, OWN magazine, and the OWN network. Not only is she a motivational guru, but she’s created one of the most iconic brands of all time.

“When you wake up in the morning looking for the light, the light will come.” How does Oprah own her power in the morning and set herself up for success?

Firstly, Oprah doesn’t believe in alarm clocks, she uses the natural alarm clock of her canine companions to wake her up. The first thing she does every morning is brushing her teeth, then promptly takes her dogs out into nature for a 15-minute walk.

She spends this time setting herself up for her day, tuning in, breathing in prana, and being present in the beauty of nature. Exercise is a key point in her morning, Winfrey always has a morning walk but also tries to get in another 30 minutes of exercise where she either does some light stretching, goes for a run, or a little weight lifting.

With morning being one of her most cherished parts of her day, Oprah’s morning routine also consists of offering gratitude to a higher being. She acknowledges herself, both in the physical and spiritual body, while giving thanks for the people, places, and things that have helped shape her life and career. Meditation is a key component in Oprah’s life, not only does she practice it herself, she has joined together with Deepak Chopra, an alternative medicine advocate, to create meditation challenges for others to participate in.

Being the philanthropist Oprah is, she has taught many seminars around the world focusing on her morning routine, and the importance of gratitude and prayer. There is one prayer she uses more than others with her teachings, one that embodies everything she believes in and stands for.

"Open your heart and quietly to yourself say the only prayer that's ever needed: Thank you, thank you, thank you," Winfrey said. "You're still here. You get another chance this day to do better and be better, another chance to become more of who you were created and what you've been created to fulfill. Thank you. Amen."

Oprah's morning routine: get inspired

Oprah’s morning routine also consists of her being inspired by others. One way she gains inspiration is a subscription to the “Bowl of Saki,” which sends her messages every morning with the teachings from Hazrat Inayat Khan, the founder of Sufi Order. The Sufi practice focuses on the renunciation of worldly things, purification of the soul, and receiving guidance from spiritual leaders. These messages are sent to her inbox every morning with a different perception of how to face the day and the challenges it may bring.

Without struggle, one does not see the highs and lows in life. Without struggle, one might just “coast” through their day unaware of their actions or decisions. Oprah once said, “Everybody has a story. And there is something to be learned from every experience.” Meaning every experience, whether good or bad will help shape who we are in the future, but it’s our responsibility to, “turn our wounds into wisdom.” Shedding light onto these wounds might help us discover what we are truly passionate about and what our power of service is for others.
